Overview of Volunteer Programs in Nepal

Namaste and welcome to Nepal, a country of high Himalayan Mountains, artistic monuments, exotic wildlife, and diverse cultures. Nepal extends along the south slopes of the Himalayas in central Asia.

Although Nepal is small, it has the greatest latitudinal variation of any country. The land rises from the southern plains of the Terai, barely above sea level, to the top of the Mt. Everest, the highest peak on Earth, in a distance of less than 200 km.

Location

About Kathmandu

Kathmandu, the capital and largest city in Nepal, is like no other city in the world. The decaying buildings in the heart of the city are a contrast to the lively atmosphere that permeates the streets. The smell of incense wafts from the stores while street sellers push their wares, and people go about their daily lives, all against a backdrop of historic temples and carved statues.

For most visitors to Nepal, Kathmandu Valley is the arrival point and the primary focus of the visit. This small, mountain-sheltered valley is the historical center of Nepal, a place where kingdoms rose and fell, where palaces and temples were built and rebuilt, and where Nepali art and culture was developed and refined. Rivers and streams interlace with the landscape, the brick-red villages cling to ridges to preserve precious land and even from the bustling centers of each of the cities, it is possible to catch a glimpse of the snow-capped peaks of the majestic Himalayas against the intense blue skies.

Dates & costs

The World Endeavors Volunteer in Nepal program is flexible in duration and can be tailored to last between 1 to 12 weeks. If you have the time, we recommend a stay of at least 4 weeks. Admissions are rolling, and World Endeavors volunteers can choose when they would like to start their program. Volunteering in Nepal FAQs

To volunteer in Nepal, you start by choosing a program that matches your interests. You then complete an online application through World Endeavors, and once accepted, you’ll receive guidance on preparing for your trip. This includes securing the correct visa, arranging travel and health insurance, and completing any recommended vaccinations. Upon arrival, you’ll attend an orientation and be introduced to your placement, housing, and in-country support team.

Volunteer programs in Nepal with World Endeavors are primarily located in Kathmandu. Many projects also involve work in the Himalayan regions (e.g., Everest and Annapurna trekking zones) and Buddhist monasteries situated outside the city.

Yes, most foreign nationals need a visa to volunteer in Nepal. Volunteers usually enter on a Tourist Visa, which can be obtained on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at Nepalese embassies and consulates abroad. The visa can often be extended for longer stays through the Department of Immigration in Nepal. An exception is for citizens of India, who do not require a visa to enter Nepal. It is recommended to confirm the latest requirements with the nearest Nepalese embassy or consulate before traveling.

If you have questions about the process, feel free to contact us and our team will be happy to guide you through the steps.

Volunteer opportunities in Nepal with World Endeavors include teaching English and basic subjects in kindergartens and schools, supporting physiotherapy and rehabilitation internships, assisting with canine rehabilitation for stray animals, joining women’s empowerment programs, and teaching in monasteries. These projects provide a meaningful way to contribute to local communities while gaining valuable cross-cultural experience.

Packing for Nepal depends on the region and season. Lightweight and breathable clothing is helpful for lower elevations and daytime. Warm layers are essential for high-altitude areas like trekking zones or monastic stays. Also pack sturdy hiking or closed-toe shoes, rain gear, a hat and sunscreen, insect repellent, and basic toiletries. Don’t forget important documents—passport, visa paperwork, travel insurance—and any necessary gear if participating in outdoor or trekking-adjacent projects.
