Overview of Study Abroad Programs in Scotland

Surrounded by ocean except for a 96-mile border with England on the southeast, this land of mists and heather will capture your imagination as a study abroad destination. First settled around 9 500 years ago, Scotland is rich in archaeological sites and well-preserved landmarks. Let it weave its magic around you as you saunter through its stone-built villages in between immersing yourself in inspiring studies at age-old educational institutions with cutting-edge technology.

Home to some of the oldest universities in the world, some dating back to the 15th century, Scottish education is globally recognized for its teaching excellence and quality research. Learn from global experts, while building lifelong connections with your fellow international and local students. Studying in Scotland, part of the United Kingdom, will give you access to untold opportunities to expand your perspective on the world, grow your expertise in your field and boost your career prospects.

WHY STUDY IN SCOTLAND

Scotland is filled with learning sites, from the archaeological sites in Orkney to marine centers in Shetland, where you can leave the classroom, be close to your subject and get firsthand experience in the field you are studying. At the same time, there has been a strong push to make the latest technology accessible in the classroom.

When you are not in class or out in the field, Scotland offers ample opportunities to head out and explore the mountains, coastline and culture. Walk the Fife Coastal Path along rugged crags and stop for a pub lunch at St Andrews, the home of golf. Or take a trip to Islay, one of the beautiful Hebridean islands, and taste a dram or two of famous Islay Scotch. Wherever you go, soak up the dry humor and friendliness of the locals in this once-in-a-lifetime study experience.

I realized once I got back that I learned more than I thought I did—not that I didn’t think I learned a lot, already. Three of my goals were to make more international friends (check), amp up my French comprehension (check), and expand my worldview (check).

EdenStudy in Spain

AliciaStudy in Thailand

I have to say that what I remember, as much as the delicious colors and flavors of Thailand, are the people I crossed paths with – the other students who became such good friends, and the local Thais who showed me such kindness. And of course the food. I still dream of the food.”

HeatherStudy in England

It was amazing to be able to say I traveled to six countries in one semester.

KristenIntern in Morocco

Scotland FAQs

Is Scotland in the UK?

Scotland is one of the four constituent countries of the United Kingdom (UK), along with England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. While Scotland has its own legal, educational, and religious institutions and limited self-governance through the Scottish Parliament, it is still part of the UK and represented in the UK Parliament.

What Language Do They Speak in Scotland?

In Scotland, the predominant language spoken is English. However, there are two notable indigenous languages: Scots, with its various dialects, is widely understood and spoken by many, while Scottish Gaelic, primarily found in the western Highlands and the Western Isles, has fewer speakers but is the focus of preservation efforts. The distinct Scottish accent in English and the diversity of its cities also mean that different communities speak numerous other languages.

What Currency Does Scotland Use?

Scotland uses the British pound sterling (often referred to as the “pound”), which is denoted by the symbol “£” or the ISO code “GBP.” While banknotes issued in Scotland might look different from those in other parts of the UK due to Scottish banks having the right to print their designs, they are still pound sterling notes and hold the same value as their counterparts in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

When is the Best Time to Travel to Scotland?

The optimal time to visit Scotland is from late spring to early autumn (May to September), offering milder weather and longer days, especially in May and June. While July and August draw the most tourists, especially with events like the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, it’s also the best period for wildlife spotting. However, if you prefer a picturesque countryside adorned with fall colors, autumn (October to November) in the Scottish Highlands is incredibly captivating, though the weather starts to cool.

Is it Safe to Travel to Scotland?

Scotland is generally considered a safe destination for travelers, with a relatively low violent crime rate, especially in rural regions. Significant cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow might experience occasional petty crimes like pickpocketing in tourist-heavy areas. Travelers should be cautious on narrow and winding rural roads, especially in the Highlands, and be prepared for unpredictable weather if engaging in outdoor activities.
