Language Requirements
The Select Internship Cohort in Madrid welcomes interns from all over the world, and we aim to make the experience accessible for participants regardless of their Spanish proficiency. Below are the language requirements and opportunities for language learning during the program.
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
- English: Since most internship placements, especially our first-class international company partners in this program, operate in English, fluency in English is essential. Interns are expected to have at least an intermediate level of English (B2 or higher) to effectively communicate in the workplace.
- Spanish: While Spanish is not a strict requirement for most positions, having a basic understanding of the language will significantly enhance your experience in Madrid, both professionally and socially, which is why we also include Spanish language classes in this program. Certain roles, especially in fields such as Law and Finance, may require a working knowledge of Spanish, depending on the nature of the work and the company. In such cases, we recommend having at least an A2-B1 level in Spanish.
SPANISH LANGUAGE CLASSES
To help interns make the most of their time in Spain, Spanish language classes are included for the first two weeks of the program:
- Classes from beginner to advanced are offered, taught by native Spanish-speaking teachers in small groups of up to 8 students.
- 20 group classes per week for the first 2 weeks are included Monday through Friday mornings from either 9am to 1pm, or 1pm to 5pm.
- A variety of engaging cultural and social activities: from museum visits to cooking classes to dance classes – are offered every weekday evening.
BENEFITS OF LEARNING SPANISH
- Improved Professional Communication: While many companies in Madrid operate in English, learning Spanish will help you communicate more effectively with colleagues and clients, especially in more localized or client-facing roles.
- Cultural Immersion: Mastering even basic Spanish will allow you to engage more deeply with Madrid’s rich culture, navigate day-to-day activities, and feel more integrated into the local community.
- Networking Opportunities: Speaking Spanish will broaden your networking potential within and outside the workplace, helping you form deeper connections with locals and other professionals.
