8.3.12-ireland-programs-abroad

The lore of Ireland is often a cliché too many - pocket-sized leprechauns, cheery shamrocks, a towering pint of Guinness. Beyond the trite and marketable icons, there are real gems to uncover with a visit to this verdant isle. Ancient ruins, thriving metropolises, sea-side vistas, and rock-walled pastures fill the countryside. For many, Ireland is about simple pleasures: a hike through the countryside, a cozy night in a dimly lit pub, or a hearty meal shared with a new friend. As contemporary as U2’s newest release or as antique as a fiddle’s boisterous reel, Ireland invites and warmly engages.

The Emerald Isle

“The Emerald Isle,” Ireland’s moniker for hundreds of years, evokes images of gently rolling hills in rich and vibrant hues of green. The lush landscape that has inspired poets, artists, writers and musicians such as James Joyce, Francis Bacon, and U2 is as picturesque today as it was centuries ago. Ireland’s hospitality is world renowned, and participants will discover firsthand why the Irish are known as some of the friendliest people in the world.
